Canadian Birth Record Lookup or Evidence Report
The cost for a Birth Record Lookup or Birth Evidence Report for a single Canadian-born ancestor is between CAN$200 and CAN$700, exclusive of document copying and shipping fees. The cost depends on case complexity. These are genealogical research services, not certificate application assistance.
A Birth Record Lookup is typically for those whose ancestor was born before the start of provincial birth registration. It aims to locate a baptism record and provide a copy from the original authority (i.e., the archives) that keeps the record. On-site searches of Toronto archives are possible. A baptism record cannot always be found, but the charge for this service is for the time and skill required for the look-up, not for the result.
A Birth Evidence Report is a genealogical report that presents evidence, as available, of a Canadian ancestor’s birth in Canada. This evidence may be useful if there is no direct-evidence document (e.g., a birth registration or baptism) to prove an ancestor’s birth. The report includes images of available documents. The client may use information contained in the report to order copies from original authorities.
IMPORTANT: It is the responsibility of an applicant for a certificate of Canadian citizenship to determine what documentation they need to support their application. Some companies charge as much as US$3,700 to identify a biological parent or other ancestor with no guarantee of success. We can do this work for less. We typically provide an initial 10-hour DNA research session and report for CAN$900.
The research and the written report will:
- survey and describe the research that was undertaken in the time available;
- if possible, suggest an answer to your research goal — typically a theory that the evidence supports; and
- provide suggestions for additional research to either confirm or rule out the theory and the candidate(s) identified.

I’ll meet with you online to provide customized information, education, and advice about DNA testing and analysis so you can take the next steps. You’ll have access to a recorded version of our meeting that you can download and save. CAN$100 for a one-hour session. You can invite multiple participants.
